AN INTRODUCTION
Traffic Cycle Design is a design and fabrication shop specializing in high-end bicycles. We work closely with our customers and use our relationship with them to develop solutions that are specific to their needs. Our goal: to produce elegant, efficient bicycles, tailored to the needs of our customers, using the manufacturing techniques that are most appropriate to their intended uses.
At the heart of the shop is myself, Spencer Wright. Along with a small and select group of collaborators, I source, design and manufacture every item I sell. All work is done in my small shop in Southampton, NY. I am a lover of technique, craft, and efficiency, and I'm passionate about tailoring my process to fit the needs of my customers. I'm enamored by old-world manufacturing techniques without being blind to their design limitations, and I'm excited about technological developments while maintaining skepticism about their necessity. As a result, I use a variety of processes to complete each job, some new and some old. My aim as a fabricator is to use the method that is most appropriate for the task at hand. I build lugged, fillet brazed and TIG welded bicycles; each method has its own place.
My primary medium is steel. Steel provides an excellent array of features which make it a great choice for bicycle frames. Steel is strong yet has the elasticity that allows for a comfortable ride. Modern steel bicycle frames are very light while remaining extremely durable. Moreover, centuries of steel manufacturing have given us a deep understanding of the material and a wide array of tools with which to manipulate it. As a result, steel offers a great value to a rider: it performs extremely well while remaining very affordable. However, I recognize that many other materials offer traits that steel cannot (the light weight of titanium; the formability of aluminum; the endless opportunities offered by composites). My shop is capable of fabricating parts from any number of media, and I do not hesitate to step away from steel when the conditions call for it.
I build bicycles of all types, but my favorite ones are those that will see daily use. I enjoy bicycles the most when they're helping me get somewhere, and I like them to be efficient and elegant while doing so. I've built everything from race-ready road bikes to long-distance touring mountain bikes, and work closely with my customers to design bicycles that fit comfortably and gracefully into their lives.
My highest goal is to marry good design, conscientious manufacturing and attentive customer service. I look forward to working with you.
